The initiative targeted buyers at three levels:  B2B (wholesale buyers, merchandisers), B2G (green procurement and government purchasing officer associations), and B2C (retail) buyers. It resulted in a 241% increase in Internet traffic, delivering more than 14,000 buyer referral sales leads to participating companies.

He has been a key architect and team leader in identifying the development of targeted marketing strategies including B2B, B2G, B2C, niche markets, segmented marketing, key influencer marketing, strategic alliances, relationship marketing, lifetime customer strategies, destination marketing, corporate sponsorships, and share-of-pocket strategies.

Mr. Brown has a Masters degree in Energy and Resources from the University of California at Berkeley, one of the first universities in the nation to focus on soft path renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies as well as conventional energy technologies.  He is currently working with Benchmark Built, Inc., a general contractor based in Westlake Village, California, developing green building marketing initiatives for the Ventura County area.

While serving as Director of Strategic and New Business Development to the National Marketplace for the Environment (NMFE) and Eco Expo he developed multi-year strategies and oversaw their implementation to bring together buyers and sellers of environmental products and services through trade show and event marketing.  This program included showcasing state-of-the-art green building technologies in the pre-LEED GreenTech Environmental Office of the 21st century (led by Sandy Mendler of HOK working with ekoloji and GSC General Contractors (later Benchmark Built).  He also worked with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) in the design and development of Administrator David Barram’s “Planet GSA” which included “Build Green” and “energy efficiency” components to accelerate and expand the number of new and existing Federal facilities built to green building standards.

As an analyst in the Policy and Program Evaluation Office of the California Energy Commission (CEC) and as assistant to Commissioner Suzanne Reed, (one of five commissioners appointed by the Governor of California by statute to develop and implement State energy policy), Mr. Brown has experience evaluating and making policy recommendations to policymakers on the full range of energy technologies (solar thermal, photovoltaics, green building, energy efficiency, wind, biomass, etc.).  While at both South Pole and McMurdo, he performed building-by-building energy and water usage analyses and submitted recommendations to ITT Antarctic Services, Inc., and the National Science Foundation for improving energy and water usage efficiency.

Through his work with trade associations, government purchasing agencies, government business development offices (RecycleStore), DoD agencies (e.g., DLA), nonprofit sustainable and green products enterprises, private sector enterprises and domestic and international (e.g., Sweden’s 6E TCO) green labeling systems, he has become familiar with a wide variety of databases used in sustainable development projects.

An avid adventurer, Mr. Brown solo-backpacked in single seasons the Pacific Crest (2,600 miles) and Continental Divide (2,700 miles) trails.  He has completed the one-day 63-mile (100-kilometer) hike from Washington, D.C. to Harper's Ferry.  He worked at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station and wintered-over on Ross Island, Antarctica at McMurdo Station.  During the Antarctic winter, he worked as a power plant operator at a 5.2 MW plant — the largest on the Antarctic continent — affectionately referred to as Occasional Power & Light.  In 1989, he lent a hand in the wildlife rescue and treatment efforts following the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound.

He currently is an advisor to the non-profit organization Green2Gold (an arm of the non-profit Inventors Workshop International) which is dedicated to assisting inventors and engineers incorporate sustainability, energy efficiency and environmental considerations into the earliest stages of invention, intellectual property development and product design. He is also a member of the USGBC Los Angeles Chapter.
